A mentor or advisor is not required for success but can be extremely helpful in the development of your business. A mentor/advisor may help you formulate an idea and act as a consultant and offer advice, but the actual work on a business-related project - study designs and analysis of provided data - must be carried out independently by student protégés'. You must be able to demonstrate how you have advanced your business endeavors independently, and research or project reports assigned must clearly describe the extent of any involvement by your mentors or advisors.

Acceptable use policy instructions are in place and account for:

1. which mentor and expert links will be used,
2. when the links can be used and by whom (student/mentor),
3. e-mail policy (student and/or mentor),
4. approval of questions by administrator or mentor,
5. how information/research will be communicated,
6. instructions and policy for use of PDAs (if applicable),
7. instructions and policy for use of laptops (if applicable),
8. Timelines for business-related projects and research assignments

A mentor or advisor should have a clear understanding of IBSA's Mentoring Program guidelines Mentors must understand the needs of the student protégé' whom ultimately are the primary researcher of content for their projects. Assignments must reflect diligent effort to establishing their own concepts and content development. The mentor/advisor will help you evaluate business problems before you begin your research assignments and can give you relevant feedback or insight as you progress. They will help you understand the application of strategic business principles and well-founded methods that you can employ within your business as well as assist you in thinking about future pitfalls and providing you direction for further research.
